I love rounding off a good day on the hills in a welcoming pub, here are my favorite 10 pubs in the uk where you can be sure of a warm welcome.
Top of my list is the Clachaig in Glencoe, surrounded by mountains and at the foot of one of the best Ridge walks in Britain, the Aonoach Eagach. You can walk straight off the hills and into the Boots Bar to share your stories of adventure with friends or other walkers and climbers.
The Wasdale Head Inn has been frequented by drovers and travelers for over 200 years as a watering hole before tackling the high passes to neighbouring valleys. Wasdale is a remote and tranquil valley in the western Lake District steeped in climbing history, it’s a world away from tourist locations of the eastern Lake District.
There is an excellent route up England’s highest mountain Skafell Pike starting from the pub car park
The Old Dungeon Ghyll has been providing hospitality to climbers and hillwalkers for over 300 years. The Hikers bar has a unique atmosphere often frequented with walkers, climbers, campers and bikers.
Situated in Great Landale valley there is some fabulous day walks including the Langdale Pikes, and Ghyll scrambles, not to mention the walk over Sty Head to the Wasdale Head
The Cluanie Inn is set the remote Glen Shiel just east of the Isle of Skye. It’s surrounded by 21 Munros and is a great location for a traverse of the Glen Shiel Ridge and the Five Sisters of Kintail. The iconic Eilean Donan Castle is nearby which is well worth a visit. The Cluanie Inn has a a range of over 100 of the Highlands’ finest single malts – what better way to celebrate a good day Munro bagging than with a single malt?
The historic hotel at the foot of Snowdon is where Hillary and Tenzing trained for the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. With oak paneled rooms and historic pictures you feel you are stepping back in time. It’s central location in Snowdonia is an ideal spot for exploring the mountains and crags.
With Sgurr nan Gillean in the background it’s hard to find a more dramatic setting in the UK. Sligachen has served mountaineers and walkers for nearly 180 years, its even got it’s own climbing museum and micro brewery. I always get a sense of excitement when I reach the “Slig” as I’m on my may to another adventure on the Cullins. There is a bunkhouse and campsite across the road from the pub with some ferocious midges in summer months – you have been warned!
The Golden Rule in Ambleside is a hidden gem and a regular haunt for walkers and climbers after a day on the fells or lakeland crags. Its a traditional multiroom pub with focus on good beer, great craic and no interruptions from TV or juke boxes.
The Old Forge on Knoydart is the remotest pub on mainland Britain and can only be reached by hiking over mountains or catching a ferry. If you make the journey you are likely to be met by an eclectic mixture of walkers, kayakers, sailers, singers and poets.
Fresh Seafood is a specialty with langoustines, scallops and mussels delivered daily from local lochs. Carnivores are well catered for with Vension and lamb from the estate. The Knoydart foundation provides more information about this fascinating remote including details of the campsite and bunkhouse.
9 New Inn
The New Inn is located in the Yorkshire dales beneath the three peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. This is a fabulous location to explore the dales with Ingleborough show caves and White Scar Cave a short distance away. The awe inspiring Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are also well worth a visit
The Highwayman sneaks in at number ten for it’s unique character. Quoted as being the most unusual pub in Britain, The Highwayman Inn sits in on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It’s apparently got a resident ghost
